After we selected Tesla as our solar installer, we had a professional roofer inspect our home. He told us that while our roof was in good condition, solar panels can last 20+ years. Base on his recommendation, we replaced the roof under the pannels with a brand new one just 2 days before Tesla came out to install.
We were excited to have our panels installed by a “reputable” company like Tesla. We were surprised that there were dozens of people on the roof. But we felt Tesla would stand behind their product. We trusted them to provide qualified installers.
Once the panels were finished and ready to be turned on, we informed our insurance company about the panels. They asked that we have a roof inspection done. We were very surprised about the findings. The inspector notified us that there was major damage to the roof! He also said it was clear this damage was caused by the solar panel installers.
Though we were upset, we believed we would be able to come to a civilized agreement with Tesla. They are a fortune 500 company, and we had evidence, pictures, and frankly a very clear claim. Tesla started a drawn-out process that took over a year and a half. They created a type of internal review process. Even though it was not really producing results, we thought “progress is progress”…
The result of Tesla's review process... "Someone else did it!" No pictures, evidence or any type of report. Tesla and I had both taken pictures of the new roof before install. And as the picture above shows, the damage is under the panels. So, unless Keebler elves were working on our roof, this would be impossible. After another 3-month review process, Tesla finally admitted it was them!!
Tesla said that while they caused the damage, it was only aesthetic and normal. You can ask anyone, they will tell you there is no such thing as aesthetic roof damage. Tesla was telling me that I would have to pursue them legally.Eventually Tesla will be held accountable. But we hope our story warns others before they get into a major financial relationship with Tesla.
